Vendor Opportunities in the Commercial Internet Market

This report, based on a survey of 169 decision makers that have direct, "hands-on" involvement with implementing and supporting their companies enterprise internetwork, examines the rapidly rising commercial Internet market.

Today, the Internet is the world's oldest and largest "network of networks." What began in 1969 as an exercise in packet switched networking by the Department of Defense now connects 25 million to 35 million people in over 100 countries. BRG predicts this number will quadruple, to 100 million users, by the year 2000.

In 1994, six primary Internet business categories had total revenues of $854 million. BRG expects this market to exceed $4 billion by the end of 1997.

BRG believes the commercial Internet market will mature in three phases:

o In phase one, the Internet is used simply as a network transport. o Phase two, from 1995 to 1998, will see improved security,

performance and predictability over today's Internet. o Phase three will be characterized by better Internet

navigation tools, database integration and information

dictionaries.
